Most AI is built where the data centres already are. We are doing the opposite on purpose. The problems we care about — capital that does not reach the Global South, commerce that runs on trust, infrastructure that has to work in heat, rain and forest — are not found in the places that train the largest models. They are found here.

Three things Suriname has that most labs do not

Power that is already largely renewable. Roughly half of the country’s electricity comes from hydropower. A lab that sizes its compute for the grid it actually has, renewable first, can grow without pretending energy is free.

Connectivity that recently changed. New subsea capacity, live since 2024, means a research campus in Paramaribo can work with partners in Europe, the Americas and Asia in real time.

A physical laboratory. With more than nine-tenths of the country under forest, Suriname offers terrain, logistics and climate conditions that a simulator alone cannot teach. That is exactly what world models and simulation-to-reality transfer need.

Why now

First offshore oil is expected around 2028. Revenue will bring opportunity, but also the pressure to spend it on what is familiar. We think a small, well-governed technology base — built before that moment — gives the country an option it will not easily get afterwards.

What we are not claiming

The Frontier Lab is in formation. Sites, compute and partnerships are being agreed, not announced. When something becomes real it appears in our progress log, dated to the month.
